Over the past two decades, Los Angeles-based photographer Dorit Thies has established herself as a distinctive voice in beauty and fashion photography, creating imagery recognized for its refinement, emotional resonance, and strong visual identity. Her commercial work has been commissioned by leading international brands and publications, including Estée Lauder, Sephora, Revlon, ELLE International, German Vogue, Italian Vanity Fair, and Men’s Health.

While her career has been rooted in beauty and fashion, Dorit’s artistic practice has continually evolved beyond the confines of the commercial image. In recent years, she has expanded her visual language to encompass botanical still lifes, landscapes, conceptual portraiture, and experimental compositions—using the camera as a means of observation, interpretation, and personal expression. Her early botanical work led to an invitation to Europe, where she presented the series in a solo exhibition in 2020.

At the core of Dorit’s practice is an ongoing curiosity about people, places, and the poetry found in the everyday. Her work is driven by a desire to look beyond the obvious and to find beauty, character, and meaning in unexpected places.

Her most recent personal project turns her attention toward the American road and the people who inhabit it. Inspired in part by Richard Avedon’s In the American West, Dorit is creating a portrait-driven body of work focused on truck drivers https://doritthies.studio —the largely unseen individuals whose labor is essential to the movement of the country. Through intimate portraiture and visual storytelling, she seeks to move beyond the stereotype of the profession and reveal the individuality, dignity, resilience, and humanity of the people behind the wheel.

The project represents a natural progression in Dorit’s practice: from photographing the constructed ideals of beauty to exploring the unguarded character of real people. Ultimately conceived as a photographic book, the series is both a document of contemporary America and a deeply personal exploration of identity, work, freedom, and the human stories encountered along the road.
